This semester, the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at the George Washington University welcomes Aruna D’Souza, the 2022-23 William Wilson Corcoran Visiting Professor of Community Engagement. She is an art critic and writer praised for her 2018 book Whitewalling: Art, Race and Protest in 3 Acts. D’Souza’s work has amplified conversations of racial representation within the art world–specifically, how Black subjects are often used to aestheticize or accessorize pieces.
At the Corcoran, D’Souza teaches the courses “Writing about Others” and “Writing about the Self.” With this coursework, she hopes to teach the next generation of writers and artists about crafting meaningful relationships with both themselves and their subjects through their work. The Corcoran also welcomes Assistant Professor in Graphic Design Marc Choi, who explores the role of visual design in creating new identities in shared spaces; Interior Architecture Assistant Professor Douglas Crawford, an award-winning architect focusing on the conjunction of design and digital methodologies; Assistant Professor and Undergraduate Advisor for Graphic Design Aasawari Kulkarni with a focus on design’s impact on human culture and behavior; Theatre & Dance Assistant Professor Sidney Monroe Williams who builds communities in theatre by analyzing the nuances of race, gender, and class; visiting Theatre and Dance Professors Jennifer Hopkins and Giselle Ruzany; and visiting Interior Architecture Professor Melina Misri.
