Kris Harris
Bio
Kris Harris (they/them) is a DMV-based dance artist and educator. Kris holds an MFA in Dance from the University of Maryland School of Theatre, Dance, & Performance Studies and a BFA in Dance from Adelphi University. In addition to teaching modern technique at GWU dance, they are also a Choreographer in Residence at American University for fall 2024. Kris’ dance research is anchored in sensation-based movement, navigation of identity, rock and roll history, and Queer wonder. They are a 2024 recipient of the Artist and Scholars Grant from the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County, which is supporting their newest dance work Building the Engine. Recent choreographic projects include Shift (commissioned work for Washington College Theatre & Dance Department), the McLean School’s production of the Addams Family Musical, Frequency Machines (Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, MD) and Responsive Wild (Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, MD).
Currently, Kris teaches dance technique at George Washington University and flow yoga at Thrive Yoga in Rockville. They have also served as dance faculty for Dance Loft on 14 (D.C.), Imagination Stage (Bethesda), Rose Qi Dance Arts, the Beer & Ballet Project, and Montgomery County Public Schools.
Prior to traversing to the DMV, Kris lived in Brooklyn, NY where they performed and collaborated with a variety of individual artists, shared their choreography at Movement Research, Gibney Dance, Triskelion Arts, Dixon Place, and taught dance improvisation and choreography at Adelphi University.
In addition to dance, Kris is a yoga teacher (RYT200), Usui Reiki Practitioner, Chakra and Sound Healing certified, and in training to become a professional breathworker. They enjoy fusing these healing arts into their dance practices.
