What is this?

A workshop where students will learn about a social movement and design a poster expressing how “creativity is power” in shaping collective action through narratives (and counternarratives). Our workshop will allow students to explore animation techniques in their posters, resulting in a poster design that is a looping animation.

Session one
Dates

  • Session 1: Wednesday April 7, 7 - 8:30 PM ET
  • Session 2: Wednesday April 14, 7 - 8:30 PM ET
  • Session 3: Wednesday April 21,  7 - 8:30 PM ET

 


 

What are the learning objectives?

  • Identify a historical and/or contemporary social movement that interests them.
  • Research the movement of their choice individually.
  • Define an audience they want to reach.
  • Design a poster to support (or counteract) a specific movement narrative.
  • Discuss how they got from their research to their concept.
  • Plan a looping animation of their poster.

 


 

How will it be run?

Week 1 (Session 1: Wednesday Evening April 7, 7 - 8:30 PM ET) - RSVP

  • Introduce Ricky, Elena, and James introduce themselves
  • Discuss what makes a compelling poster, how posters reflect social movements
    • Define Movement, Narratives and Counternarratives, Audience
  • Assign research guidelines and design prompt
  • Participation activity (Eg, discussion on two posters, demo simple poster design via screen share)
  • Preview animation segment next week

 

Week 2 (Session 2: Wednesday April 14, 7 - 8:30 PM ET) - RSVP

  • Students present their progress (in a shared Google Slides presentation)
  • Ricky, James, and Elena facilitate breakout groups for group critiques
  • Discuss how poster design has changed in digital age with animation
  • Animation tutorial

 

Week 3 (Session 3: Wednesday April 21, 7 - 8:30 PM ET) - RSVP

  • Students present final posters and discuss what they learned

 

Final (by May 5, 2021)

  • Pieces are included in a web gallery for the NEXT exhibition (launching May 10, 2021)
  • Student posters are featured on GW Corcoran digital channels
  • A selection of final posters are printed and sent/handed to students

 


 

What will students walk away with?

  • Deeper knowledge about a social movement
  • A moving poster for their portfolio / body of work
