Alexander Dumbadze

Bio

Alexander Dumbadze is an Associate Professor of Art History. His most recent book is Jack Goldstein: All Day Night Sky (University of Chicago Press, 2026). He is also the author of Bas Jan Ader: Death Is Elsewhere (University of Chicago Press, 2013; paperback 2015) and co-author and co-editor, with Suzanne Hudson, of Contemporary Art: 1989 to the Present (Wiley-Blackwell, 2013; Korean translation 2015). His essays and criticism have been published in a variety of national and international publications. A recipient of a Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant, he was a Visiting Professor of Art History at Université Paris 8 – Saint Denis in 2012. He co-founded The Society of Contemporary Art Historians in 2007, and served as its president between 2012-2015. He teaches classes on Contemporary art, Theory, and Historiography.

Current Research

Prof. Dumbadze's current research focuses on three general topics: Los Angeles Conceptual Art, Southern California Light and Space movement, and American art and culture of the 1990s.
