Hale has been heavily influenced by inaccurate historical maps and clocks from revolutionary era France. The name Fathom is employed for its simultaneous meaning as: an anthropometric unit which is the span across two outstretched arms, to imagine or understand something, and to measure a depth of water. The piece itself has a one-fathom diameter.
