The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) in Gelman Library has openings for the following Graduate Student worker positions:

Job Title: Student Library Assistant II, Public Services

 

Position Summary:

This position supports the work of the Special Collections Research Center in providing reference services and fulfilling research inquiries. This position gives the student assistant valuable experience working with researchers and developing primary source research skills.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Retrieve and reshelve materials from stacks for patrons and staff as needed.
  • Staff the reference desk and assist on-site patrons.
  • Fulfill patron requests for scans and photocopies of materials as directed.
  • Help with stacks maintenance and temporary inventory control
  • Answer research requests for remote patrons as assigned.
  • Record keeping tasks to support collection management practices and use of archives and rare books by students, faculty, and researchers.
  • Other special projects as assigned.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Punctuality.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Basic computer skills (i.e. Windows, MS Office, Google Apps).
  • Ability to search the library catalog and locate books on the shelf using a call number.
  • Data entry experience.
  • Willingness to learn new systems and techniques.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with spreadsheets, databases, and/or graphics software.
  • Experience scanning images and documents.
  • Previous work experience in a library, archives, or museum.
  • Interest in history and/or historical materials.
  • Research experience. WORK HOURS AVAILABLE:
  • 15-20 hours per week
  • Between the hours of 9:00 – 5:00 Monday – Friday

 

WORK LOCATION:

  • This position requires on-campus work in the Special Collections Research Center at Gelman Library. There is no remote work component for this position.

 

STARTING WAGE:

  • $16.60 per hour

 

Job Title: Student Library Assistant II, Archival Processing (3 Open Positions)

 

Position Summary:

These positions support the work of the Special Collections Research Center in processing the records of the department, specifically those in the Washingtoniana and/or University Archives collections. These positions provide valuable experience with archival processing and materials handling for future archivists, records managers, museum curators, and scholars.

 

There are three Processing Student positions available, with each position focusing on different collections or subject areas–candidates will be considered for any of these positions. Two positions will also have a public services component and will be assigned reference duties. Additionally, one of the positions will work on digitization projects.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct arrangement and description work for archival records including physical rehousing, organizing content, describing this content in a collection management system and performing data entry.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills (Windows, MS Office, Google Suite, web searching).
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to learn new systems and techniques.
  • Punctuality and reliability.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess a strong interest in history and/or archives and special collections.
  • Familiarity with archival theory and best practices.
  • Experience processing archival collections.
  • Previous work experience in a library, archives, or museum.
  • Familiarity with digitization of materials.
  • Experience providing reference services in a library or archives.

 

WORK HOURS AVAILABLE:

  • 12 hours per week
  • Between the hours of 9:00 – 5:00 Monday – Friday
