About the Thomas Jefferson Foundation
The Thomas Jefferson Foundation was incorporated in 1923 to preserve Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Today, the Foundation seeks to bring history forward into national and global dialogues by engaging audiences with Jefferson's world and ideas and sharing the history of everyone, enslaved and free, who lived and labored at Monticello. Monticello is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, a United Nations World Heritage Site, and a Site of Conscience. As a private, nonprofit organization, the Foundation's regular operating budget does not receive ongoing government support to fund its twofold mission of preservation and education. Role: Americana Foundation Curatorial Intern (One year/Full-time) – Located in Charlottesville, VA
The Thomas Jefferson Foundation seeks a one-year American Foundation Curatorial Intern. The intern will catalog objects in Monticello's permanent collection, primarily American and European furniture, silver, ceramics, and various examples of Jefferson-related material culture. The intern will work closely with Monticello's Associate Curators to:
- Refine an inclusive approach to cataloging.
- Study and catalog approximately 800 objects.
- Update and correct collections files.
- Work towards sharing new research virtually and through Monticello's digital platforms.
- Research and plan for new exhibitions and other projects.
Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated expertise with American, African American, and European, primarily French, decorative arts, and material culture, dating from 1775-1825.
- Familiarity with cataloging practices and protocols; experience preferred.
- Familiarity with standardized nomenclatures, including Chenhall's Nomenclature 4.0. and Getty Vocabularies.
- Familiarity with safe object handling practices.
- High level of attention to detail and spatial awareness.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize duties; willingness to learn new systems.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- High level of computer literacy; knowledge of Proficio or other collections management systems preferred.
- Knowledge of Monticello collections preferred.
MA degree in Decorative Arts, Material Culture, Museum Studies or related field and/or 1-3 years curatorial or collections experience required. This is a paid internship.
