Biography
Peter A.R. Wilson, AIA, Leed AP® balances being a licensed architect as Principal at the ateri group LLC with his academic pursuits as teacher, mentor and community advocate. His professional work supports public and private sector developments alike, and he guides both graduate and undergraduate design students to achieve their fullest. His professional career spans 35+ years, specializing in planning and design delivery of numerous design typologies, including: hospitality, retail, senior living, workplace, multi-family & private residential built environments, covering various sizes, budgets (small to multi-million dollar), complexity and funding sources. He has led master and strategic planning initiatives throughout the northeastern, mid-Atlantic and Southern states, extending into the Mid-West, in addition to serving as an architectural design consultant on several international development projects. Leading by example and integrity is his hallmark. Not only a fervent practitioner of both urban and rural architectural interventions, his passions also focus on the interior architecture realm, promoting the core differences between how architects can support the interior built environment in concert with all design disciplines beyond the conventional understanding of separated technical architect vs interior designer’s roles in the design process and outcomes. Peter shares that design philosophy with what he names the Big-C Cohorts: Clients (Constituents); Contractors and Colleagues (Community) – all of whom affect, inform and define a project’s success.
He also teaches both at the graduate and undergraduate levels at The University of Maryland – College Park’s School of Architecture, after previously lecturing at Morgan State University and Anne Arundel Community College Schools of Architecture. Peter is the faculty advisor for the UMD AIAS chapter. He recently chaired the UMD 2025 M.Arch Graduate Thesis Director’s Award recipient.
With his research and advocacy for accessibility regarding respectful and empathetic education and inclusion for all user populations, Peter brings expertise and commitments to the greater senior living arena as a Trustee at Broadmead, Inc, a Quaker-based Life Plan community in northern Baltimore, serving on it’s expanding strategic planning initiatives. Peter is a long-term relationship-builder who guides, mentors and leads with integrity and trust for transformative results.
Peter holds undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Art History from Kenyon College and a Master of Architecture from Washington University in St Louis. In between those academic pursuits, he was honored to be a Smithsonian Institution Intern assigned to the National Museum of American Art (currently the Smithsonian American Art Museum – SAAM) and the Renwick Gallery, in the Exhibition Design and Registrar’s offices.
