Richard Leiby

Bio

Richard Leiby is a longtime editor and writer at The Washington Post. He joined The Post in 1991, hired by Ben Bradlee. His previous assignments have included Pakistan bureau chief and correspondent, “Reliable Source” columnist and assignment editor and writer  in Washington. He has reported from various conflict zones, including Gaza, Afghanistan and Iraq. He has written about four presidents, dating to George H.W. Bush. He served as a G.A. and arts editor, including editing the Sunday Style and Sunday Arts sections. And he covered popular culture – including music, comedy and film. He survived covering the Oscars in L.A. -- twice.

In his career as an editor and manager, Leiby assigned and edited two projects that reached the Pulitzer features finals. He has won awards for features and investigative journalism, including first place from the National Association of Black Journalists. Prior to joining The Post, he was an editor and writer at newspapers in Clearwater, Fla., where he covered the Church of Scientology (which later unsuccessfully sued him and The Post); Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and St. Paul, Minn. He teaches as an adjunct at George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs, and also in the GWU Corcoran School's visual communications program for graduate students.
