Head Museum Technician and Preparator

Start Date: January 2024
Salary range (based on experience): $50,000 - $55,000

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Head Museum Technician and Preparator is responsible for the safety and security of the art collection, building and grounds. They coordinate and supervise independent contractors and serve as Head Preparator.

RESPONSIBILITIES include:

Security of building and grounds and collection:

  • Security of Building and collection: Point of contact for issues and projects concerning the security of this Philip Johnson-designed building and collection. Maintain timely communication with the designated security company and follow-up with necessary service check and/or staff training. Ability to be on site as needed off hours (please note the museum is not easily accessible by public transportation).
  • Maintenance: Engage, serve as point of contact and oversee work performed by all contractors (including but not limited to, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, atrium garden, irrigation and pool service, roof, structure) and provide reports as needed to Board of Trustees.
  • Supervise and train security staff and provide updated training and manuals as needed.
  • Serve as Gallery Security as needed.
  • Conduct daily check of galleries, storage spaces and grounds.
  • Keep all artwork properly and securely stored.

Head Preparator:

  • Coordinate and support and assist all aspects of art and exhibition space preparation, installation, and de-installation.

Other:

  • Set up and monitor AV/PA for Museum events and concerts.
  • Other tasks assigned by the Director.

Qualifications:

  • Training in architecture, building design or related field.
  • Experience in art museum.
  • Ability to multitask; excellent organization and communication skills and ability to establish and adhere to project goals and deadlines.
  • Front facing position requiring strong social skills.
  • Enthusiasm for working both independently and as a team.
  • Firm command and understanding of current best practices and enthusiasm for working in an art museum.
  • Willingness to contribute to a positive and collaborative culture that welcomes all audiences.
