Corcoran Community Gallery at THEARC- One Night Silent Art Auction to Benefit Stanton Elementary

March 1, 2013

New Media Photojournalism student Clary Estes has organized a one-night silent auction to benefit Staton Elementary School on Tuesday, March 12.

In a photojournalistic presentation entitled Second to None, Estes, shares the emotionally charged moments captured during her year-long examination of Stanton Elementary School. Deemed a ‘turn around’ school in Washington DC’s Anacostia neighborhood, Stanton was the second worst performing schools in the district three years ago. This exhibition documents the fleeting, yet powerful moments of struggle, turmoil, prayer, and hope of the students who must perform in a system in which they have little say, but where they thrive, nonetheless.

In addition, Stanton students created their own art works, in an exhibition called The Long Way, which will accompany Clary’s pieces on display and for auction. The collaboration gives an insightful and introspective look into the lives of students and the community raising them.  Both Estes’ photographs and the accompanying art created by Stanton Elementary students will be available for purchase through a silent auction. Smaller prints of Estes’ works are also available for purchase. All proceeds will go to the DC Scholars education program and Stanton Elementary.

The Long Way is free and open to the public. Refreshments provided.
