Held every spring, NEXT is a dynamic, interactive and innovative end-of-year show that gives D.C.’s art community the opportunity to see the latest in contemporary art from fresh perspectives. Visitors have the opportunity to observe thesis critiques and discussions between students in the fields of studio arts, art history, interior architecture, design, dance, theatre, music and museum studies and faculty, while students are able to build connections with potential employers and art dealers.

In addition, for the first time this year, MA Museum Studies will be displaying their research and work in a related exhibition during NEXT.

Music, Theater and Dance honors students will be performing throughout the months leading up to NEXT. A selection of students from these degrees will also be presenting their work at NEXT 180.

When will I be able to install?

Due to the diverse group of programs, installations will vary by department. Please consult your thesis advisor. In general, BFA Studio Art, Photography, and Photojournalism will install no later than late April. Other Design majors will install at a later date to accommodate their needs. For the BFA Studio Art, Photography and Photojournalism students, their work will be installed in an earlier window so they are able to conduct their final critiques.

What happens if I do not pick up my work after the exhibition closes?

Your account will be charged a fee in the amount of $200.

What are the exhibition hours for NEXT?

While the exhibition is open from April 24th - May 18th, 2020, people can visit during these hours:

Tuesday through Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday: 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Can I still show someone my artwork outside of public hours?

Yes! If you have video or tech in your installation, please coordinate with Jillian Nakornthap to turn on the technology before the visitor arrives.  In order to accommodate your requests, we ask that you make the request for technology to be on at least three (3) business days in advance. If you make a request after that window, it will be up to the discretion of the Exhibitions Team as to if they can accommodate the request.

Who is responsible for coordinating NEXT?

Jillian Nakornthap ([email protected]) will be responsible for the exhibition, art history symposium, and lectures. Any questions regarding label or logistical concerns for installation should be directed towards [email protected]. Ann Norton ([email protected]) will be handling all of the performances from music, dance, and theater.
